It came as a shock to pretty much everyone, I would guess Frank Fielding included, when the Rovers youngster was picked for the full England squad today.

And it has been said by some that maybe his inclusion is a sarcastic retort by Fabio Capello at Paul Robinson, the man who snubbed him after his England recall earlier this week.

It’s unlikely Fielding, or Watford’s Scott Loach who also received a call-up after Ben Foster pulled out of the squad with an injury, will see any action. That is unless Joe Hart adds to the England chief’s misery.

Personally, I think it’s a great idea to include players like this in the squad.

I’ve thought for a while that the answer to some vital transfer money lay in our goalkeeper situation. We have three experienced stoppers, all of whom could be first choice for a top flight club, vying for the number one jersey at Ewood.

There’s only one man who’s ever going to keep that jersey, though, and that’s Robbo.

Jason Brown has stepped in on a number of occassions for the odd match and has always looked comfortable. When Rovers sold Brad Friedel to Aston Villa two years ago, I said at the time we should simply promote Brown, and I firmly believe he would have been a solid first choice keeper for Rovers.

Mark Bunn is the same, in fact he was something of a fans’ favourite at Sheffield United last season I have been led to believe.

Let these two players go. They must be desperate for a game. They are both wasting away in the reserves, sitting on the bench and playing the odd cup match.

Sell them for a combined £2million to swell the coffers. That would give us £4.5million in the transfer kitty, although it’s getting a bit late for transfers as it is …

Then promote Fielding to the number two spot as Robinson’s understudy. I saw him play for Wycombe Wanderers at Lincoln City while I was at university in Lincoln and he was unbeatable. To me, there seems little point having so many keepers in the rank when we have one who has the potential to step up to the plate within our own ranks already.

As for his selection in the England side, I reckon this should be done in all positions.

Now, in goal, we have three keepers all under the age of 25. Do that everywhere. Drop the has-beens. They were classed as the Golden Generation back in 2006 and weren’t good enough then, so they are certainly not good enough now.

Drop the lot of them, bring in a team of under-25s and breed a team capable of winning the World Cup in 2014.

In other news, a quick well done to Phil Jones on his England Under-21 debut. Apparently he could have scored as England beat Uzbekistan 2-0. Fielding also played in the game but by all accounts had absolutely nothing to do.

In this summer’s World Cup, Paul Robinson was excluded from the England squad.

I’ve gone over it several times, verbally and on this blog, to anyone who will listen … And those that really would rather not.

Robbo has been in fine form since escaping his Spurs nightmare. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still a hero at Tottenham, but he had to move on to forget about the so-called blunder for England – how can it be his fault when the ball bobbled over his foot? – which resulted in his massive dip in form.

Since signing for Rovers, Robinson has become a real fans’ favourite.

Rovers fans have always had a great relationship with goalkeepers.

We’ve been lucky over the years, I can only remember one bad keeper in my time watching them – Mimms, Flowers, Filan, Kelly, Friedel, Robbo – the bad one being Alan Fettis, signed when both Flowers and Filan were injured in 1997 (or 8).

Robinson has slotted in to fill the void left by Brad Friedel – probably one of the best keepers in the club’s history – really well and has deserved a recall to the England squad for a while.

He was left out of the World Cup squad in favour of West Ham’s Robert Green, the English keeper with the most unforced errors in last season’s Premier League, despite keeping the most clean sheets out of all the English keepers in the league.

He can count himself unlucky, if you ask me.

England’s World Cup, as you well know, ended in disaster, and now the team must be rebuilt. Fabio Capello turned to the man he shunned and dropped Rob Green and veteran David James.

But Robinson has decided to call time on his career. A nice little two fingered salute to the man who wouldn’t give him his chance when it mattered.

He’s right to do so, too. Ben Foster, who has had a stop-start England career, was also recalled, along with City’s young Joe Hart – you’d think the next England number one. So Robbo’s chances of being selected in the starting eleven are slim. Even if he was to out-perform the other two in the league, history has shown that this has no bearing on whether he gets a game or not.

So rather than traipse around Europe sitting on the bench at pointless international friendlies, he’s just as well concentrating on his club career at Rovers.

England fans were left in shock on Saturday night as the unthinkable happened. We didn’t beat the Yanks.

Over-the-top expectations once again meant that the opening to our World Cup campaign is a disaster and all Brits have a sour taste in their mouths.

Yes it was a disappointing result, but with Algeria and Slovenia to play, surely we’ll finish the group with seven points?

Put it this way, if England don’t qualify then they’re definitely not as good as everyone thinks they are.

The States has gone overboard, as you can see from the front cover of the New York Post, pictured.

Back to the match itself, and it was a particularly disappointing display from England. I’m not going in for all this guff about America performing well and holding us to a draw.

We held ourselves to a draw, throwing away two vital points and making qualification that little bit more difficult.

Rob Green made an error. Fact. And I could go back to the Paul Robinson debate again here, but I won’t. I could say something about how Rob Green made more unforced errors than any other English keeper in the Premier League last season. But I won’t. And I definitely won’t mention, again, that Paul Robinson kept more clean sheets than any other English keeper in the Premier League last season.

Green’s blunder was a big one. But it was nothing major. So far in this tournament, in which much has been made of the ball, I’ve seen Thomas Sorenson spill one for Denmark and Cameroon’s Souleymanou let one slip through his hands when the catch seemed straightforward. I also believe Algeria’s keeper had a similar problem.

Unfortunately for Green, and England, in our case the ball ended up in the back of the net.

I thought his attitude after the incident was admirable. He didn’t let the mistake affect his performance and made a couple of decent stops in the second half. Then, he came out and spoke to the press, giving a full and frank statement about what had happened. Usually you would expect the individual to slink off and sink into a reclusive state of depression.

It’s this attitude that leads me to think Capello should throw him back into action in Friday’s game.

A couple of players who need to see less action are Emile Heskey and Jamie Carragher. Heskey set up Gerrard for England’s goal – a goal that I, along with everyone inside Hammersmith Apollo and, I believe, anyone else who watched the game on ITV HD, didn’t see – but his inability to score when through on goal is unforgivable for a man who is paid to be a forward.

Carragher is simply past it. He came on as a sub and was behind the pace of the game all the way through.

That aside, let’s go back to the positives. We didn’t lose. We have a point. We have two poor teams to play next. Basically, if we don’t win the group, we are crap.

Now that I’ve finally stopped foaming at the mouth, I can finally put my dismay at Paul Robinson’s World Cup exclusion into words.

Fabio Capello has said, on numerous occasions, that he will make his selections for the English national team based on form.

Is that right, Mr Capello?

Let’s look at the form books then shall we.

Paul Robinson has been extremely safe for Rovers this season, pulling off numerous quality saves and has been a crucial part of a solid defensive back-line.

He has also kept 13 clean sheets. That’s more than any other English goalkeeper in the Premier League.

I’m not saying he’s perfect, and some argue he is prone to mistakes when playing for England.

Yes, he cocked up once against Russia, but he made 41 appearances for his country, and you don’t get that many through making mistakes.

In the 2006 World Cup, he kept four clean sheets, so don’t try telling me he’s not good enough.

He also plays for a team that finished 10th in the Premier League. Not one that finished bottom of the league – and would have still been bottom had they not been deducted points, don’t give me any of that romantic Pompey bollocks, they weren’t good enough whether they were skint or not – or five points clear of the relegation zone.

I’m not arguing with the inclusion of Joe Hart. He’s proved himself to be a good goalkeeper this year and could represent the future of England goalkeeping.

But it seems to me that David Jame has been picked purely because he’s been around so long. He’s automatically selected because, hey, he’s David James. Maybe he’s just there to be an experienced guide for the inexperienced Hart. Who knows?

But Robert Green is not as good as Paul Robinson. And his “form” hasn’t been as good as Paul Robinson’s. These are facts.

Robbo’s problem is nothing new. Rovers players, historically, have to be something very special to get into the England team.

Just look at the players we’ve had who have missed out. Stephen Warnock, David Dunn, Matt Jansen, Chris Sutton, Stuart Ripley, Tim Sherwood, Jason Wilcox, David Thompson.

They’re all players who should have played a bigger part in the England team of their generations, and all would have done had they played for West Ham, or Birmingham, or any of those sides considered bigger than us while never actually winning anything.

One case in point is Stephen Warnock. Last season he hardly got a look in. He was given that one pathetic chance to shine in a friendly in Trinidad. I mean, I’d look good against Trinidad and Tobago … Now, he’s suddenly in the England side because he plays for Aston Villa.

He hasn’t done anything spectacular this season. He’s merely continued to put in solid performances week in, week out, but at Villa Park, those performances do not go unnoticed. At Ewood, on the national scene, it’s like they never happened. Just watch how much time is devoted to showing and talking about Blackburn Rovers on our nation’s great Match of the Day.

David Dunn was fantastic when he first emerged. He may have been better had Souey not taken a dislike to him. Matt Jansen was so depressed after Martin Keown – who didn’t play a single match – was taken to the World Cup in 2002 that he went on holiday to Italy and nearly killed himself in a motorbike accident. He may have lived but it killed his career and any aspirations he had of playing international football.

Jansen had scored 16 goals for Rovers that season. How could he have been overlooked?

David Thompson was another who showed real class for Rovers and was rewarded with one substitute appearance. Chris Sutton, half of the deadly SAS with Alan Shearer, was persecuted after refusing to play for the England B team. It was something he shouldn’t have done, but to kill of his England career was ridiculous. That season he scored 21 goals for Rovers as we put in our last genuine title challenge – I can see why he was insulted by Glenn Hoddle’s offer.

I can go on, but I fear this rant has gone on too long. I’ll leave you with Big Sam’s thoughts on Robbo’s exclusion:

“I’m staggered, totally. I think it’s the wrong decision completely. Fabio has made the biggest mistake of his selection process.

“If you look at his form for Blackburn Rovers, there’s not a better English goalkeeper who has consistently performed as well as he has. So it clearly can’t be anything else other than something that Fabio has against him.

“He’s always said that people who are in good form would get selected and there’s nobody in better form than Paul Robinson — 12 clean sheets in the Premier League speak for themselves. I don’t know what more he wants.”

Now we can just live in the hope that Rob Green gets injured … Although, if that did happen, he’d probably recall Scott Carson.

I’ve stopped posting stuff from the newspapers really because, let’s face it, you’re more likely to read them than this. So you probably already know.

However, a couple of articles this week have got my juices flowing.

Article one appeared in the Daily Mail, listing the owners of all the Premier League clubs and how much money they have. I’ve stolen their graphic to post below, but technically I’m an employee anyway so I hope they don’t mind…

It shows our gracious benefactors, with Uncle Jack’s money, very high up in football’s rich list, with £590-million to their names. That’s £160-million more than Walkersteel sold for back in 1992.

Now, I know they’re trying to sell up, but until the sale they’re stuck with us. When Jack died he left that money in a trust, with some instructions in place, I’m no financial expert but I believe we get the interest or a percentage thereof, from the money as it sits in the trust.

Apparently, that equates to about £3-million a year at the moment. Hardly enough for Rovers to compete in the Premier League and, despite us being, in my opinion, the best run club in the league, it’s a fact that without significant investment we will get relegated at some point over the next five years, as the big-money men take control more and more every season and we are going to get left behind.

It makes me sick that they can sit in Jack’s box every game and watch us head ever more gloomily towards oblivion. In the grand scheme of things, I believe the trustees are about 19th in the football rich list. And that puts them about 7th in the Premier League rich list, yet we continue to struggle…

Article two, which I’m not quite as bothered by, regards the England goalkeeper situation. Paul Robinson has, without doubt, buried his past demons since he was brought to Ewood by Paul Ince at the start of last season. Big Sam stuck by the Hull-born former Spurs keeper, who made a howler for England and lost all his confidence, which ultimately lost him his place at Tottenham.

I am confident that he is good enough to merit a place in the England squad.

Anyway, Martin Lipton’s blog looks at the contenders for the England number one shirt. They are Robert Green, David James, Joe Hart, Ben Foster and Robbo.

Immediately I say Robert Green, then Robinson. David James is too old, Ben Foster too shit and Joe Hart too inexperienced. Through scoring the contenders in ‘decision-making’, ‘shot-stopping’, ‘kicking’, ‘penalties’ and ‘gaffe-factor’. From that Robbo comes third with a paltry 33 out of 50. Robert Green gets 40, while pensioner David James somehow manages 38. How a 39-year-old keeper can be realistically suggested as an England number one is beyond me!

To a man, everybody at Ewood Park can take some credit for today’s vital win over Wigan.

In defence, Paul Robinson was unbeatable. An absolute wall in the Rovers goal. I saw some stupid article, probably written by some twat from America who’s never actually witnessed a real football match, which ranked Robbo as the third worst signing this season, he has surely answered any critics today, and with the England goalkeeping situation as it is he’s surely worth a chance, isn’t he? Very unlucky not to get Sky Sports’ man of the match in my opinion, although McCarthy did play well!

The rest of the defence was very solid. Givet and Nelsen never lost anything, Ooijer and Warnock at full back as reliable as ever. Special mention must go to Nelsen for scoring the best goal I have ever seen… What a time to score your first goal for the club!

We won the midfield battle. Diouf was exceptional down the right. I was dubious about the Senegalese midfielder when we initially signed him, but he really has shown his qualities and looks extremely dangerous every time he gets the ball. Pedersen looked about as good as I’ve seen him in a year while Tugay’s passing and Dunn’s energy kept us on top.

Samba was as solid as ever, despite not scoring he was involved in both goals, blocking Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland to provide McCarthy and Nelsen with perfect scoring opportunity’s. McCarthy scored the opener and set up the second. His cross was an absolute peach, keeping reasonably low and maintaining zip it was just begging for slight nod, and that’s exactly what the Admiral did. Who better to score the winner than the captain?

However, and this is where my headline comes in, the fans really answered Big Sam and Ryan Nelsen’s rallying cries. Turning up in numbers and singing their hearts out for 90 minutes. I’m gutted I wasn’t one of those 25,000-odd fans who really did their part in a fantastic day. It’s really good to see a club initiative pay off like this, going to show we really do have a board that has the fans’ interests at heart!

As I write I’ve just seen the league table on MOTD 2 and would like to point out IT IS WRONG. The league table shown had not been updated since last night and we are now 15th, on 37 points, six points clear of Boro in 18th and seven clear of Alan Shearer’s Newcastle, who take on Portsmouth tomorrow in an absolutely vital clash which could all but seal their fate!

Today was fantastic. When we play like that we show we really are capable of a much higher league position and, pretty confident of survival, I am beginning to look forward to next season.

Just when you need your team to pull together for the remaining fights of the season, this happens.

Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz claims he has told the club he is leaving at the end of the season for “a bigger, more ambitious team”.

The 27-year-old, currently recuperating after undergoing a surgical procedure on his troublesome right knee last week, told Paraguayan radio he has informed Rovers he wants to move on in the summer.”I have already told them (Blackburn) and they know that before the transfer window closes I would like to continue my career at a bigger, more ambitious team,” he told Radio Nanduti.

“Even though I haven’t heard anything, I haven’t changed my mind.

“I think it will be very difficult for me to play again this season because of the recovery. Our last league match is on May 24 and I also need a couple of days for my knee to physically recover.”

The former Bayern Munich frontman could, therefore, have played his last match for Blackburn, as he does not intend to take to the field again before he is 100% fit.

The way the fans cheered him after he stayed in January and this is how the Paraguayan shit repays us. Thanks.

In other news, Fans FC (who I regard as one of the least reliable sources of news in football) say we are going to sign Cameroon keeper Carlos Kameni, meaning Paul Robinson would leave the club. Unlikely. Robbo has been solid this season and has endeared himself to the Blackburn End since replacing Brad Friedel, whose boots were massive to fill!

- As I said in the previous post, we have 11 (now 10) cup finals between now and the end of the season. With this being our game in hand it is the most important result we’ve had this year and could well be the difference come the the finale!

- Nice to see Diouf get his first goal for the club. He’s done well since signing and this will only serve to boost his confidence. He looks really fired up, you can see that from his reaction to winning games, so I’m pleased for the lad.

- Jason Roberts yet again proving he’s a good player for us. Possibly the most important goal he’ll ever score.

- Paul Robinson keeps on proving himself as a top notch keeper. He made a great save from Nevland with the last kick of the game and must surely be due an England call-up soon!

- We didn’t deserve to win. Fulham probably had enough chances to bury us, but who cares? We dug deep and got the result we needed. It’s resolve like this that could see us stay up.

- 15th in the league feels a lot safer. Now we’ve got Newcastle, Stoke and Portsmouth move below us in the table, which is wonderful!

- I’d like to wish Roy Hodgson all the best. He’s doing a good job at Fulham and I like the man. He took us into Europe in his first season in charge and the 1997/98 season was one of the most memorable seasons we’ve had.
