Spurs/Chelsea: Sick of Cockneys

Paul Robinson limps off at Spurs

So Spurs away ended in a disappointing defeat.

We were doing well enough in the first half and should have had a penalty when Dunn was brought down in the box, but Spurs never looked back after Defoe prodded in their first towards the end of the half.

The ref did his best to make enemies on both sides. How Howard Webb can be considered England’s best still remains a mystery. When he didn’t give Spurs a penalty in the second half after Bale was tripped, one can only assume he had seen a replay of the penalty he denied us in the first.

Not many positives to take from another unhappy trip to the capital. Salgado was torn apart by a very impressive Gareth Bale on Spurs’ left wing and Paul Robinson limped off, leaving us without our first choice stopper for a month.

It was great to see the response Robbo got from the Spurs fans. He’s still a legend to them and he deserves that kind of response.

I’ve always rated Jason Brown for the few occasions he has played for us. And he has always remained quite positive with fans, despite his lack of exposure to the first team.

But there’s no defence for the way he let Roman Pavlyuchenko’s shot squirm underneath his falling body for Spurs’ second, a goal which effectively put the game beyond Rovers.

A late comeback may have been on the cards after Samba scored with 10 minutes to go, his second at the Lane for Rovers, but we were unable to capitalise on any of our pressure and allowed Pavlyuchenko to score a third.

Following that disappointing defeat, Rovers now take on Premier League challengers Chelsea who will be well up for their title challenge after being dumped out of the “Champions’ League” on Tuesday.

I can’t say I was disappointed to see Chelski beaten by Inter, but I hope we don’t now face a backlash.

It’s hardly the perfect time for us to play a side with the attacking prowess of Chelsea, a side who have blown us away in most of our recent encounters – I was at Stamford Bridge earlier this season as Drogba and co smashed five past our swine flu sufferers.

Add to that the list of defensive players on our injury list and it makes for grim reading. As well as Robbo, we are missing captain Ryan Nelsen and Gael Givet, as well as Lars Jacobsen and, of course, Vince Grella. This, I assume, will mean Chris Samba will continue to deputise as captain.

Chelsea are missing Ashley Cole, Essien and Bosingwa, but have Drogba, Lampard, shagger and co to wreak havoc at Ewood. We definitely cannot afford any more Browny slips.

David Dunn is back and Basturk is still waiting for his debut.

Aside from team news, Ancelotti may well be after revenge at Ewood, where we ended his hopes of landing the Carling Cup by knocking them out on penalties earlier in the season.

As ever, we are relying on our solid home form to see us through another difficult game. However, the home form stats are a little bit hollow if you look at the teams we’ve played.

Two home defeats have come against City and Spurs. While the only “top four” side we’ve played up to now is Liverpool. After Sunday we still have United and Arsenal to come to Blackburn.

That said, I never go into a game without feeling confident we can win it. No matter who it’s against. If we play to out best we can beat anyone.

At least after this we’ve got a guaranteed win next Sunday!

Come on you Blues.

  2. TopspurTim Said,

Hey fella just to let you know we hate em too but thats because only Eastend people born in Bow can be called Cockneys the rest of us are just Londoners i would have to say your team played really well against us but it will be a different kettle of fish when UTD and ARSEnal come play you good luck with that

  3. roversreturn Said,

Cheers for the comments guys. Davspurs – We don’t get much credit for our football at present and yes, I think Browny will be fine.

Tim – Haha, fair cop. As a northern monkey, anyone that resides within the M25 circle is a Cockney to me.

  4. spursphil Said,

TopspurTim, sorry mate you are totally wrong about Cockneys the east end and Bow.

Bow bells are located in St mary le bow church, cheapside in the city. Not in the east end.

Dick Whittington heard bow bells calling him back to the city to become Lord Major, he was in Highgate at the time.

  5. ParkLane67 Said,

Just grateful he wasn’t in Highbury!

  6. roversreturn Said,

Welcome to The Rovers Return London geography discussion group

  7. Ted Said,

strange how the blackburn blog has only spurs fans on it. Perhaps thats why there were only about 50 rovers fans at WHL last week? The premier league needs to say goodbye to bolton, blackburn and wigan. Shocking support keeping spurs fans out of WHL. What time’s your minibus lads?

  8. T.R. Said,

not born in bow, but born hearing the bow bells makes you a cockney
You played well rovers, and youll never go down if you keep sam
but youll never win nothing either

  9. roversreturn Said,

Ted – Rovers’ support frustrates me at times, but the club is in the Premier League because it deserves to be. And when it gets relegated it will be because it deserved to be. Why should loyal fans like me – I go to every home game and as many away games as I can afford (granted I wasn’t at Spurs but I have been to two London aways this season in West Ham and Chelsea) – be limited to lower league football simply because there isn’t that many of us?

  10. roversreturn Said,

From Rovers Return Facebook fan Duncan Miller:

“What time was kick off?And how far away is it? Was it on Telly? How much are tickets to one of your games? So before we even start looking at the economic climate there are plenty of reasons anyone with half a brain can see.

Greed driven club who started the trend of stock market floatation with Irving Scholar… but still way off the real big clubs. Greedy, corrupt spurs.”

  11. Ted Said,
